Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) es un escritor de horror cósmico y ciencia ficción. Su obra influyó a muchos autores del mismo género y de otros también. Comenzó escribiendo relatos de terror clásico y narraciones oníricas, producto de su admiración por Edgar Allan Poe y Lord Dunsany; pero su mejor legado, sin duda, lo representa la serie de relatos conocido como "Los mitos de Cthulhu".
Dicha mitología está coronada por la inclusión de dioses maléficos llegados de las estrellas que portan nombres impronunciables; y también hacen su aparición diversos libros malditos que sirven para invocarlos, algunos de existencia real y otros ficticios. Pero sin duda alguna, el más misterioso y aterrador es el ¿real? ¿ficticio? Necronomicón.
Obsesivo, pesimista, enfermizo, perseguido, miedoso, Lovecraft logró plasmar en sus escritos uno de los miedos más antiguos: el temor a lo desconocido. Ya no hay vampiros u hombres lobos, sino monstruosas entidades venidas de los abismos cósmicos. No tiene exclusividad la noche como escenario terrorífico, sino que cualquier morbosidad puede ocurrir a plena luz del día. Y ya no hay mujeres sensuales como víctimas, sino viejas brujas como victimarias.
Aunque no fue reconocido en vida, después de su deceso sus obras comenzaron a venderse con gran importancia. Autor de terroríficos relatos, además escribió poesía, artículos periodísticos y más de 100.000 cartas. En la actualidad, es reconocido como uno de los maestros del género del terror y la ciencia ficción.
